About Stephan

Stephan Balleux is a Belgian artist who lives and works in Brussels.His work deals with the position of painting in our digital age. The various techniques (drawing, painting, sculpture, video and special effects) constitute as many fields of investigation. From these experiences emerges an image, in constant change, erasing any temporality. Like a virus, the pictorial texture propagates itself and its digitalization becomes an eminently contemporary process.

Agnosia: Agnosia is a cognitive disorder manifested by a lack of recognition ability . The subject reached perceive stimuli but does not process them at a logic level. The "Agnosia" project originates in the "ars mnemonia", the "art of memory", a mnemonic device dating back to the ancient Greek and parent of rhetoric. This technique consisted of imagining an entire house in great detail,its light and architecture, during a mental pre-established stroll with objects and characters in order to recall in detail a speech or a story. By extension, this technique promulgates the power of the image as such in the process of memorization and by extension that of the mental organization of an individual. The image is a thought in itself and a powerful factor in mental conceptions. Then the image becomes thought and language in itself. The interesting idea is that the text and image are inseparable, and that a hierarchy between these two modes of thinking is unproductive. The choice of title is linked to this particular moment of discovering something, which one knows he does not recognize, but which nevertheless has a very real effect on the person who discovers. In addition, the project seems perfectly fit into the conceptual artistic prerogatives of the foundation Aurélio Petroni: space, memory and time. The project consists in creating a house a labyrinthine structure in computer-generated animation, and convey the viewer in different rooms visually and metaphorically representing the human concepts. These concepts are chosen in relation to my own understanding of what drives people to action, which makes him a member of the human condition. The room to room passage will explore visually both millennia archetypes and personal mythology, while awakening the viewer's own psyche. Each room will literally represent emotions or image concepts. The meaning of the images will be hidden within the sequences, not within the illustration of ideas. Due to the 3D technology, everything is possible, and the film will show visual aberrations, scale changes specific to the art of hallucination and disruption of genres. The film will be openly poetic, ideological and unreal, while representing all realistically.
